A Pennsylvania student is being praised for her "heroism" after jumping in to stop her school bus, after the driver had a medical emergency behind the wheel.

Alexis Smith, a 10th-grade student at Hollidaysburg Area School District in Pennsylvania, is being widely praised for her heroism after leaping into action to stop a moving school bus when the driver suffered a medical emergency.

On September 18, 2026, the bus began drifting forward while students were trying to disembark. Recognizing that the driver had lost consciousness, Alexis rushed to the front of the bus to press down on the foot brake while classmate Skyla Horton engaged the emergency parking brake.

Together with fellow students Jenna Anderson and Travis Zerby, the group handled the crisis seamlessly by:

  • Securing the vehicle and opening the doors for airflow.
  • Using the bus radio and cell phones to call 911.
  • Monitoring the driver's pulse and breathing until first responders arrived, utilizing skills some of them learned in health sciences training.

Superintendent Curtis Whitesel commended the students' incredible bravery, stating that their clear-headed teamwork prevented a potentially catastrophic accident. Fortunately, the bus driver has since fully recovered and has been cleared to return to his regular route.
