The BBB of the MidSouth said they’ve already had hundreds of people calling them trying to verify unsolicited phone calls. These scammers are posing to work for local charities, taking donations for organizations like the fire and police departments. It’s early November, and already this month, the BBB of the Mid-South said they’ve received 12 reports of phony charities trying to get your money. “Calling up someone and asking for money is a sure sign something isn’t right,” Jeffery Douglas said. Douglas has received his fair share of scam calls. Now with the holiday season just around the corner, hundreds of people are calling the Mid-South BBB, trying to verify unsolicited phone calls. “They claim to be taking money for fire, the police and troopers,” said Mid-South man Jeffery Douglas, who’s fielded his share of scam calls.   Douglas got a phone call last month that you might soon get yourself next time you pick up the phone, a caller asking you to donate to help out firefighters or police in your area. Director of marketing and communication for Better Business Bureau of the Midsouth, Nancy Butcher, is warning of the newest scam going around on social media. “He was helping people during the pandemic by giving away money and in order to get the money, he needs you to pay an upfront fee, so the amount of money that you get depends on how much money you’re willing to pay upfront,” Butcher said. Butcher says after the victim chooses the amount they want to receive, they are told to go to Walmart to purchase a Green Dot gift card to pay the fee that ends up going to the scammer. “When you’ve done that, you contact the person who contacted you from Facebook and you give them the number on the back of that gift card,” Butcher said.
